New Delhi: As the number of farmers and daily wagers suicides seen a plunge of about 6 per cent from the previous year, the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) convener V.M. Singh slammed the government as well as media for not highlighting the concerns of the farmers.
According to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data on accidental deaths and suicides, 10,281 farmers committed suicide in 2019, down from 10,357 in 2018, whereas the figure for daily wagers went up to 32,559 from 30,132.
Quoting the NCRB data, Singh asserted that BJP government came in power in the two consecutive terms by making bogus promises to the farmers.
"During the 2014 and 2019 elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issues of the farmer as a result, he got an unprecedented mandate. But now, he has totally ignored the agricultural sector", said Singh.
Singh further asserted that the Modi government had announced for doubling the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the farmer. However, this claim also has proven bogus as no such promised has been fulfilled till now.
The country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) plunged to (-) 23.9 per cent during the first quarter of the financial year 2020-21 saying the 'fake narrative' of Modi government had exploded.
However, amid the grim, one sector -- Agriculture-- emerged as the only saviour giving hope for future. Agriculture sector registered a 3.4 per cent GDP growth. Had it not been a robust performance in the Agri sector, India's GDP would have tumbled further.
