BMC begins screening all 7.5 lakh Dharavi residents for coronavirus

COVID-19 cases at Dharavi, Mumbai's largest slum, have been increasing and the state government does not want to leave any stone unturned in containing the spread of the virus. A team of 150 doctors, from Maharashtra Medical Association, is helping Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) workers in the process.

Mumbai: With the number of COVID-19 cases rising in Asia's biggest slum, Dharavi, the city's Municipal body BMC, on Saturday, has started screening all 7.5 lakh residents of the area.

According to sources, on the first day, screening was started in Mukund Nagar and surrounding areas in Dharavi. During this screening, a team comprising of private doctors and municipal staff are going to every house in Dharavi.

"We are recording the body temperature with the help of a digital thermometer. We are also, collecting information from citizens by asking about their recent travel history and other questions," a BMC official said.

"During this screening, suspected persons (who are experiencing corona related symptoms) will be immediately informed to the municipality and the respective person will be tested," the official said.

"Private doctors from Dharavi through Indian Medical Council and Maharashtra Medical Council are prepared to help the municipality administration. As many as 150 private doctors will be screening the entire Dharavi in ​​the next 10-12 days with the help of municipal staff," informed local MP, Rahul Shewale.

"Due to a significant rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, the Maharashtra government may consult the Centre on extending the lockdown period. A decision is likely by evening," sources added.
