New Delhi: After the Shiv Sena called for a ban on burqa by women of a particular community, BJP spokesperson Zafar Islam claimed that Bharatiya Janata Party was not in favour of burqa ban.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, Zafar said that there was no harm to national security due to burqa. "If someone is giving such statement then it can be his personal opinion," he added.
Shiv Sena's demand to ban the burqa across the country came after Sri Lanka decided to ban it following the Easter Sunday terror attacks that killed over 250 people.
Lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar also opposed the demand to ban burqa, saying that if burqa (veil worn by Muslim women) was banned, then ghoonghat (veil worn by Hindu women) should also be banned.
