Bengaluru police's Suraksha app registers low rate of crime against women amid lockdown

While as many as 2,000 women were using the Bengaluru Police’s ‘Suraksha’ mobile application before the imposition of the lockdown, the number of users came down to 906 in April and further down to 200 in the month of May, therefore indicating a decrease in incidents of crime against women.

Bengaluru (Karnataka): While the rest of the country and the world is witnessing a spurt in incidents of domestic violence against women amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown, Karnataka’s Bengaluru, on the other hand, has registered a decline in incidents of crime against women as per the city police’s ‘Suraksha’ (safety) application.

While as many as 2,000 women were using the mobile application before the imposition of the lockdown, the number of users came down to 906 in April and further down to 200 in the month of May, therefore indicating a decrease in such incidents.

However, there have been incidents when some women have used the app to request certain essential services.

The Bengaluru Police had launched the 'Suraksha' app last year following the sexual assault case against a female veterinarian in Hyderabad.

More than one lakh women from the city had downloaded the app within days of its launch.

'Suraksha' is a fully-integrated personal safety app. It turns the smartphones of women into a discreet personal safety device.

If the app user presses the SOS button in the app, it immediately makes a call followed by a video recording of the spot, and then sends the same information to the command centre located at the city police commissioner’s office and the staffers then alert the local Hoysala patrolling vehicles to rush to the spot to rescue the victim.
