Hojai (Assam): Bajrang Dal members on Wednesday allegedly vandalised a household belonging to a minority community in North Dimarupur area of Assam's Hojai district over a girl from a certain community marrying a man from another religious community from the same household while accusing the latter of forcing and luring the woman into the marriage.

"A mob chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' barged into the house and vandalised it. They destroyed whatever they could get hold of. They are trying to burn our house down and maligning our community. Even if somebody has done something wrong, this is not the way to deal with it," said one of the residents of the household.

Demanding action against the perpetrators to avoid any communal flare-up in the area, the boy's family said, "We request the Hojai police to take the strictest action against these people. If they fail to do so there will be a communal riot in this district."

Meanwhile, the woman, in question, posted a video on social media, along with her husband, urging help from the media fraternity as her family is allegedly forcing her in-laws to hand-over their daughter to them.

In the video, the woman dressed up in a burqa can be heard saying, "I have been in a relationship with my husband for more than five years now. I knew that he is from another religion but I chose to marry him anyway. When my family got to know about my affair with him they decided to marry me off to another man which is why I decided to elope with him."

She further declared that she is four months pregnant and threatened of committing suicide along with her husband if she was forced by her family to call-off her marriage.

"I married him on my own free will and I am happy with him. I want to confess that I am four months pregnant. My family wants me to get back home but I don't want to. If I am forced to go, then my husband and I will kill ourselves along with our baby," said the girl in the video.

Police are yet to make any arrests in the case.

Post the attack, the situation in the North Dimarupur area remains volatile.
