FB accounts of police officers hacked in AP

Facebook accounts of several police officers in Andhra Pradesh were hacked and the fraudsters were demanding money from their relatives and friends. The cybercrime cell has registered a complaint and an investigation is underway.

Tirupati: The cyber crime cell of Andhra Pradesh have filed a complaint after the Facebook accounts of several police officers were hacked demanding money from their friends and relatives. The police officers came to know about the development when several known ones called them up asking about the Facebook messages.

Social media accounts of Circle Inspectors Ramakrishna and Saigiridhar and Sub-Inspectors Thimmaya and Sumathi were hacked.

The online fraudsters had sent messages to the friends and relatives to SI Sumathi Puthalapattu asking Rs 5,000 urgently. When the person concerned told that the money has been transferred, the hacker asked for a screenshot of the online payment. In a similar manner, the hacker also contacted the relative of SI Ramakrishna asking for money.

However, later on, SI Ramakrishna and SI Thimmaya posted a message on their respective Facebook walls, saying that their accounts have been hacked and requested their Facebook contacts not to deposit any money further.

"A complaint has been lodged with Cyber Crime department and police are investigating the case," the police officers said.

A cyber cell officer said, "We have initiated a probe. We will send a request to the Facebook headquarters to look into the matter. During the lockdown, we have been receiving several complaints related to online hacking. Whenever people receive any message, mail seeking financial aid, they should cross-check it with the other person before reacting to it."
