Crimes against women rise, 87 rapes reported daily in 2019: NCRB

India recorded an average 87 rape cases every day in 2019 and 4,05,861 cases of crimes against women during the year -- a rise of over seven per cent from 2018 -- shows latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau

New Delhi: Crimes against women have gone up by 7.3 per cent in 2019 and an average of 87 rape cases were recorded daily in 2019, as per the National Crime Record Bureau's (NCRB) report released on Tuesday.

The "Crimes in India - 2019" report shows that crimes against women registered a 7.3 per cent increase from 3.78 lakh cases in 2018 to 4.05 lakh cases in 2019.

"Majority of these cases under the Indian Penal Code were registered under 'cruelty by husband or his relatives' (30.9%) followed by 'Assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty' (21.84), 'Kidnapping and abduction of women' (17.9%), and 'rape' (7.9%)," the NCRB data showed.

The crime rate registered per lakh women population is 62.4 in 2019 in comparison to 58.8 in 2018.

In terms of absolute numbers, Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of cases of crime against women in India.

According to the report, 4,05,861 cases of crime against women were registered during 2019, up from 3,78,236 in 2018. Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 59,583 cases, followed by Rajasthan (41,5550) and Maharashtra (37,144).

Uttar Pradesh also recorded the highest number of crimes against girls under the POCSO Act with 7,444 cases, followed by Maharashtra (6,402) and Madhya Pradesh (6,053).

Rajasthan reported the highest number of rapes with 5,997 cases followed by Uttar Pradesh (3,065) and Madhya Pradesh (2,485).

UP Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said criminals enjoyed protection from the state government

Citing the report, UP Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi criticised the Yogi Adityanath government over the law and order situation in the state. He went on to claim that crimes against women were rampant in the state as criminals enjoyed protection from the state government.
