310 women lawmakers in India are millionaires, says report

A report compiled by Association of Democratic Reforms, an election watchdog said that out of the total 4865 MPs/MLAs from across the country, 440 (9%) are women.

New Delhi: As many as 310 current women law makers in India are millionaires. A report has revealed that there are 440 women lawmakers across India that includes MPs and MLAs. However, statistics also shows a very poor presence of women representatives both in Parliament and State Assemblies.

A report compiled by Association of Democratic Reforms, an election watchdog said that out of the total 4865 MPs/MLAs from across the country, 440 (9%) are women. "Among these 94 (21%) MPs/MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves," the report said.

Significantly, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal have the highest women representatives in the state Assembly. In Mizoram and Nagaland, there is not a single women representatives in the state Assembly. Ironically, there is no women representation in the Palrliament from states like Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa among others.

The report which also dealt with the male lawmakers background have found that out of 1642 (34%) MPs/MLAs analysed with declared criminal cases, 52 have declared cases related to crime against women. In the last five years, recognised political parties have given tickets to 44 candidates who had declared cases related to rape.

Interestingly, 14 independent candidates with declared cases related to rape have contested for Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and State Assemblies elections.
