Many people invest a lot of money in gardening, but they often forget that it is not just a one-time investment, people also need to invest their time in caring for the plants, so that they grow healthy and green. The three most common mistakes people make are in regard to sunlight exposure, watering and soil, a balance of which is essential to maintain a healthy plant.
To know more about why plants die and what can be done for better health of the plants, the ETV Bharat Sukhibhava team spoke to Babu Bipin Kumar, owner of Maa Durga Nursery in Indore, Madhya Pradesh he explains that both indoor and outdoor plants require care in different ways. For example, some plants require less water in the rainy season, more in summer and some others require it in fewer amounts throughout the year. Apart from this, the type and amount of manure also differ from plant to plant.
What Problems Can Your Plant Face?
Bipin Kumar explains that just by looking at the condition of the plant, the reason why it is not growing or why the leaves are drying out can be identified. The commonest problems experienced are green leaves turning yellow, fungus on the plant, its twigs and stems, improper watering can leave the soil dry and the soil in the pot may appear cracked. Also, the stems of the plant may start turning brown.
Besides this, the sunlight requirement of every plant is different. Some plants like rose, hibiscus, dahlia, marigold and other fruit, flower and bonsai plants need more sunlight, while plants like dracaena, calathea, lavender, parlor palm, bamboo, snake plant and philodendron, etc. require little sunlight.
In case the plants that require less sunlight are exposed to the sun for more than the desired time, you may notice a change in the color of the leaves and the plant will eventually dry out. And, if plants requiring more sunlight are kept in shade, they may not bear fruits or flowers.
What Is The Solution?
The very first and most important thing is that you must know everything about your plant. Is it an indoor or an outdoor plant, how much water will it require, for how long it has to be kept in the sun, what type of soil and manure will it grow best in, etc.
Bipin Kumar explains that manure also plays an important role in maintaining the health of a plant. Most people are unaware of the fact that the same kind of manure or fertilizer cannot be used for all plants. Manure too is of different kinds like cow dung or organic manure, compost manure, green manure and chemical manure. These are used according to the plant’s needs and the most suitable one will help your plant grow healthier, greener and live longer. Alongside, fertilizers also reduce the problem of insects in the plants to a great extent.
Insect infestation is also one of the main reasons why your plant must be dying. If there are insects in your plant, you may begin to see holes, white spots or stripes on the leaves. In such a situation, ask your gardener or an expert and use insecticides. Also, do keep in mind the amount of sun exposure and water required by the plant.
