Hyderabad: After witnessing 76.89% voting in the first phase of Assembly polls on 27 March, Assam is gearing up for Phase-2 on 1 April.
Security arrangements have been beefed up and COVID-19 protocols are in place for the 39 constituencies in the second phase of Assembly elections.
A total of 73,44,631 people will cast their vote, out of which 37,34,537 are male voters, 36,09,959 are female voters and 135 are third gender voters.
Polling will begin at 7 am on Thursday at the 10,592 polling stations which are spread across the 39 constituencies in 13 districts. In phase-2 of Assam polls the ruling BJP and Congress-AIUDF alliance are locked in a direct electoral contest.
Thursday's voting will decide the fate of 345 candidates including 26 female candidates from 30 political parties across the state.
The 8-Algapur constituency has the maximum number of candidates (19) while the 69-Udalguri Constituency has a minimum number of candidates (2).
Two (5%) out of 39 constituencies have been declared as Red alert constituencies wherein three or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
Out of 345 candidates analysed, 37 (11%) candidates have declared criminal cases while 30(9%) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
Among the major parties, 11 (32%) out of 34 candidates from BJP, 5 (18%) out of 28 candidates from Indian National Congress (INC), 5 (71%) out of 7 candidates from AIUDF, 2 (33%) out of 6 candidates from Assom Gana Parishad (AGP), 3 (16%) out of 19 candidates from Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and one candidate each from AIFB, SUCI(C) and United Peoples Party Liberal have declared criminal cases against themselves.
A total of 310 companies of security personnel including central and state armed police forces will be deployed for the free and fair election in the state.
The assembly elections in Assam have been conducted in three phases on March 27, April 1, and April 6. A total of 81,09,815 people have cast their vote for the 264 candidates contesting in 47 assembly constituencies in the first phase on March 27th.
