New Delhi: As many as 586 humans died due to elephant attacks, while 13 lost their lives due to tiger attacks in one year in India, the Centre informed.
According to the data released by the Centre, tiger attacks claimed 13 human lives in 2020 -- down from 50 in 2019, 31 in 2018, 44 in 2017, and 62 in 2016.

Similarly, elephant attacks claimed 586 human lives in 2019-20, 452 in 2018-19, 506 in 2017-18, 516 in 2016-17, and 469 in 2015-16.

The Centre also informed that it provides financial assistance to states and union territories under the centrally sponsored schemes of 'Development of Wildlife Habitats', 'Project Tiger' and 'Project Elephant' for management of wildlife and its habitats in the country, including compensation due to depredation by wild animals.
