New Delhi: With names of jail officials figuring after revelations that conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar made extortion calls to the tune of Rs 200 crore from inside the Tihar Jail premises, the director general of what is considered to be the safest prison in Delhi Tuesday transferred 23 deputy superintendent officers.
The director general's action comes after the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested some of the officials whose names figured in the case.
Some of the officers have been transferred from one jail to another within Tihar, while others have been transferred from jail headquarters to other jails. While some officers are describing the transfers as routine, others are describing the action as an eyewash.

According to information received, Deputy Superintendents Atul Sharma and Jitendra Bhargava have been transferred from Jail No. 1 to Jail No. 11 and Jail No. 8/9, while Pradeep Sharma from Central Jail No. 2 has been sent to Jail No. 13. Three deupty superintendents from Jail No. 3 have been sent to Jail No. 15, 12 and 14. Two Deputy Superintendents, Ashok and Rajendra, have also been transferred from Central Jail No. 4 to Jail No. 13 and 10.
While a lady deputy superintendent of Central Jail No. 6 has been made CPRO of Jail No. 4, Deputy Superintendents Kiran, Sanjeev, Bachha Manjhi, SC Batra, Mahendra Sundriyal, Rishi Kumar, Shivanand, SKG Murthy, Raman, Hansraj Singh, Ajay Bhatia, Sanjay Gupta and Rajesh have been transferred to different jails.
The transfer orders were issued August 17, two days after Independence Day. Experts believe that this action has been taken so that the jail administration is seen as strict. However, there are others who say that it is probably an eyewash since many officers have been posted in the same place for years.
Though attempts were made to contact Sandeep Goel, Director General of Tihar Jail, over phone, he did not respond. However, the list of transfers is available and it is learnt that more such transfers are on the anvil.
