Malaysia ex-PM attends 1st day of corruption trial

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak arrived in a Kuala Lumpur court on Wednesday for the start of his corruption trial on charges of multi-billion-dollar looting of a state investment fund. US investigators say more than 4.5 billion US dollars was stolen by associates of Najib and the ill-gotten gains were laundered through layers of bank accounts in the US and other countries.

Kuala Lumpur: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak appeared before the Kuala Lumpur court as the hearing into the multibillion-dollar looting charges against him began on Wednesday.

The trial was originally schduled to start in February but was delayed by procedural matters.

There is a chance it may be pushed back again Wednesday as Najib's lawyers applied to review the top court's ruling for the trial to begin despite several pending appeals.

Exactly ten years ago, Najib became Malaysia's sixth prime minister but anger over the 1MDB investment fund scandal led to his spectacular electoral defeat 11 months ago.
