Hyderabad: Vikram and Aishwarya Rai's film had a successful opening weekend, according to the second day's box office results. The Mani Ratnam-directed film, Ponniyin Selvan 2, has been widely released amid much excitement and anticipation. Despite the fact that the first film in the two-part epic historical saga ended up earning more than Rs 500 crore globally, the second installment is expected to perform even better at the box office. PS2 had amassed a huge audience on day one itself.

Actors Vikram, Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Trisha Krishnan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prakash Raj, and Vikram Prabhu, among others, reprise their roles in the second episode of the epic drama that chronicles the history of the Chola Dynasty. The film has reportedly garnered a pre-sales total of Rs 11 crore through ticket reservations worldwide since its release on more than 3200 screens. With PS-2's release, anticipation among fans was increased, and reviews on social media reflect how much they are taking in.

Many people referred to the movie as a hit, and some even made comparisons to SS Rajamouli's Bahubali 2 in their praise. According to early trade reports, on its second day, the movie grossed a total of Rs 24 crore in India. On April 29, 2023, there were 59.47% Tamil people in attendance at Ponniyin Selvan - Part 2.

Kalki's title novel served as the inspiration for the movie. The first part of the film dramatises the early years of Arunmozhi Varman, a Chola prince who would later become Rajaraja I, the renowned king. Since Ponniyin Selvan was published in 1955, many Tamil filmmakers have considered creating a film based on it. But, it was never realised because of a lack of funding.
