Low voter turnout in Hyderabad civic polls; 35.76 polling per cent recorded till 5 pm

Hyderabad: A low voter turnout was recorded in the high-stakes Hyderabad civic polls on Tuesday with 35.76 per cent of voters exercising their franchise till 5 pm, as the BJP slammed the ruling TRS for the low polling percentage. The polling, which began at 7 AM and concluded at 6 PM, went off peacefully without any major incident, a police official said.

The final poll percentage would be released after compilation and as per the procedures, official sources said.

The Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) ordered repoll in all 69 polling stations of Old Malakpet Ward number 26 after it was found that the symbol of CPI(M) was printed in the ballot paper instead of CPI, an official release said. The repoll would be held on December 3 from 7 AM to 6 PM in all the 69 polling stations.

The CPI complained to the election authorities on the matter. In view of the repoll, publication, broadcasting and telecasting of Exit polls on GHMC elections is banned till 6 PM on December 3, the SEC said.

Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy, TRS working president and state Municipal Administration Minister K T Rama Rao, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi, actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi were among prominent personalities who voted. As many as 74.44 lakh voters were supposed to exercise their franchise.

The total number of contesting candidates is 1,122 and the main contestants the TRS, opposition BJP and the Congress. The State Election Commission also made special arrangements in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. It enabled the COVID-19 patients to either vote at polling stations physically or to use postal ballot.

In case the COVID-10 patients have not used postal ballots, the poll panel allowed them to cast their vote during the last hour - from 5 PM to 6 PM. However, the COVID-19-positive voters should wear a mask, face shield and hand gloves, it said.

GHMC polls counting on Dec 4

After massive campaigning by the regional and national political parties, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) election will be held on Tuesday.

The counting of votes for the polls would be held on December 4.

There are 150 wards in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. The mayor's post is reserved for a woman this time. Elections will be conducted with ballot papers in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the Hyderabad city commissionerate, 817 new polling stations have been set up as compared to 2016.

There are 2,146 normal polling stations, 1,517 sensitive polling stations and 167 hypersensitive polling stations. Till now a total of 4,187 guns were deposited, 3,066 rowdy sheeters were bounded over and Rs 1.45 crore cash was seized. Drugs and alcohol worth Rs 10 lakhs were seized. A total of 55 FIRs were registered in 63 complaints, the administration said in a press release.

Hyderabad: Elaborate arrangements are in place as the stage is set for the elections to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Tuesday.

Over 74 lakh voters will decide the political fortunes of 1,122 candidates in 150 divisions in one of the most bitterly-fought polls for any municipal body in recent times.

The polling will commence at 7 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m. at 9,101 polling stations.

State Election Commissioner C. Parthasarthy said all arrangements have been made for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the elections, duly following COVID-19 regulations.

A total of 74,67,256 people are eligible to cast their votes. The electorate constitutes 38,89,637 men, 35,76,941 women and 678 others.

The election authorities are conducting the polls through postal ballots instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Voters, who have been issued Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC), have to produce it to exercise their franchise when they arrive at the polling station for voting.

Those, who are unable to produce their EPICs, will have to produce any one of the 18 alternative photo identity card documents to establish their identity. Photo voter slips will not be considered as an alternative identification document.

Voter slips were distributed to all the electors by the booth-level officers.

Those who have not received their voter slips can download the same through GHMC app/tsec.gov.in/ghmc.gov.in.

Wearing of face mask is mandatory for voters coming to polling stations. Authorities have made it clear that those not wearing masks will not be allowed into the polling station.

The GHMC has deployed 36,404 personnel for the polling duty. The personnel on Monday collected ballot boxes and other poll material from 30 distribution centres. They were also provided masks, sanitisers and tissues.

Sanitisation of all polling stations was done on Monday. This will be done again before the commencement of the poll process. A sanitiser is being provided at the entry and exit point of every polling station.

Officials said social distancing will be ensured while allowing voters to queue up at polling stations.

Director-General of Police M. Mahender Reddy said over 50,000 police personnel were deployed to ensure polling in a peaceful and free and fair manner.

Police Commissioners of Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda said tight security arrangements were made at the polling stations and other points.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar said 13,500 police personnel were deployed in 38 divisions falling under 19 police stations of Cyberabad police.

Sajjanar said around 20.5 lakh voters were expected to exercise their franchise in 2,569 polling stations covering 674 polling locations in Cyberabad.

The high-octane campaign for the civic body came to an end on Sunday. The campaign saw leaders of major parties making bitter attacks on each other.

Ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is looking to retain power in the municipal body while upbeat over its victory in Dubbak Assembly by-election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making a determined bid to wrest power.

The elections are being fought without any alliance among the parties. The Congress and the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) are also contesting the polls on their own.

While TRS, BJP and Congress are contesting all the seats, MIM has fielded candidates in 51 divisions.

The TRS had won 99 seats in 2016 elections while MIM had finished second with 44 seats. The BJP could win only four seats then.
