SC notice to Centre on foreign graduates in health sector

Acting on a petition, the Supreme Court has sent notice to the Central Government and Medical Council regarding the inclusion of foreign medical graduates in the health care sector. The petitioner demanded that the services of foreign medical graduates should be availed with the same facilities given to Indian graduates.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre and Medical Council on a petition seeking directions to the Centre and States to include foreign medical graduates in the healthcare sector of the country to deal with the rising Covid-19 cases.

The bench comprising of Justice L Nageswara Rao and Justice Aniruddha Bose heard the matter today. Medical associations and petitioners, sought the inclusion of foreign graduates in India's health care sector and demanded that they should be given facilities similar to MBBS graduates in India.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the petitioners informed the Court that there are four categories of medical professionals. It includes those who have passed the examination, those who have passed the examination but have not gotten any internship, those who have done internship but are not getting registered as well as those who have not attended the examination but are willing to serve.

The apex court said that notice will be issued for the first three categories. The fourth category cannot be included as details like the country in which they had studied, education qualifications are not known. The SC clarified that the screening exam is scheduled for June 17 and they are not exempted from exams. The matter will be taken up for hearing again after two weeks.
