Railway employee races before speeding train to save kid in Thane

A Central Railway employee displayed utmost courage when he raced an oncoming train and saved the life of a child who fell on the track in Maharashtra's Thane. The mother of the child, who was visually impaired, could not comprehend when her child fell onto the railway track but Mayur Shelke saved the child.

Thane: Displaying rare courage and presence of mind, a Central Railway employee raced against an oncoming suburban train to save the life of a child who fell on the railway track.

The incident happened at Vangani Station of Central Railway in Thane. The Pointsman Mayur Shelke's feat earned him an appreciative tweet from Railway Minister Piyush Goyal who praised Shelke's courage in saving the child.

In the CCTV footage of the incident, a woman who is visually challenged is seen carrying a heavy rucksack and walking along with a child on the platform when the child suddenly seems to stumble and fall onto the railway tracks below.

The footage also shows a local train speeding in the same direction when the Pointsman Shelke runs on that track from the opposite direction.

As the train speed headlong before him, he seemed to falter momentarily, but continued to sprint and help up the child who was trying to climb on to the high platform.

Shelke pushed the child up and also desperately climbed up himself after which barely a second later the train zoomed on to the platform.

By the time the lady could comprehend that her child had fallen onto the railway tracks, Shelke risked his own life and saved the life of the child.

"Very proud of Mayur Shelke, Railwayman from the Vangani Railway Station who has done an exceptionally courageous act, risked his own life & saved a child's life," said Goyal in a tweet.

Further details of the woman and child, how they happened to be on the platform during the lockdown norms, etc, are awaited, but Shelke's feat has made him famous on social media.
