Leaders pay tribute to Babasaheb Ambedkar

Taking to Twitter, PM Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid tribute to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 130th birth anniversary.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday paid tribute to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 130th birth anniversary.

"I bow to Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on AmbedkarJayanti. His struggle to bring the marginalised sections of the society into the mainstream will continue to be an example for every generation," Prime Minister Modi tweeted in Hindi.

"Tribute to Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar's birth anniversary, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution! Dr. Ambedkar waged a lifelong struggle to create an equitable society," President Kovind tweeted in Hindi.

Remembering Ambedkar's contribution in nation building, Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi said it was Babasaheb who asked difficult questions that helped to put the country on the path of progress.

"India is now proving that it is indeed possible to regress in time. Today, we remember Babasaheb who asked the difficult questions that helped put our country on the path of progress. #AmbedkarJayanti," Gandhi tweeted.

Born on April 14, 1891, Babasaheb Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits) and supported the rights of women and workers.

He died on December 6, 1956.

He is also known for being the architect of the Indian constitution.

In 1990, Ambedkar was conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.
