NCW seeks report from UP DGP over couple's self-immolation bid at SC

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh DGP regarding the action taken, after a man and woman set themselves on fire in an alleged self-immolation bid outside the Supreme Court.

New Delhi: The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh DGP regarding the action taken, after a man and woman set themselves on fire in an alleged self-immolation bid outside the Supreme Court. Before setting themselves on fire, the woman had recorded a video wherein she claimed that the police issued a non-bailable warrant against her, for having lodged a rape case against MP Atul Rai. Both the woman and the man are currently being treated at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.

Also, the the victim prior to having set herself ablaze had allegedly mentioned that she was being harassed and threatened by the accused. Following the incident on Monday, the National Commission for women took cognizance of the dreadful incident.

It is in this regard, the NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Director-General of Police, Uttar Pradesh seeking a detailed action taken on the matter. "The Commission has sought an explanation on the necessary action taken by Police to provide her (victim) safety and security," the NCW Chairperson said, adding that the DGP has also been asked to take action against erring police officers for dereliction of duty.

The NCW chief has also addressed a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to conduct a separate inquiry in the matter based on provisions of the law. The Commission has further asked to provide all necessary medical and financial assistance to the duo. The action taken report must be apprised to the Commission at the earliest, a statement issued by NCW added.
