Pune: While the government machinery is on the verge of collapse amid the raging pandemic, man single-handedly built Covid care facility by mortgaging gold borrowed from his wife and mother.

Umesh Chavan's 53-bedded ‘Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Covid Hospital'— a Covid care facility with oxygen beds—is proving beneficial to the patients in need.

In the second wave of corona throughout the state, there is a shortage of beds and oxygen tanks in hospitals. Even in Pune, there is an alarming situation of the corona. `

Built a Covid Hospital by mortgaging 35 ounces gold jewelry

Due to the increasing number of corona patients in Pune, there is an acute shortage of beds. Ground reports say that in some hospitals, one bed has to be shared among three patients.

Chavan built ‘Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Covid Hospital’ by mortgaging 35 ounces of gold which was borrowed from his mother and wife. He arranged Rs. 30 lakh rupees by pawning the gold.

Many friends contributed towards the noble cause:

Chavan, who heads the Patient Rights Council, arranged the money to build the facility with help from coworkers. The group managed the set up the centre within just seven days.

However, it was not a cakewalk for Chavan and his friends.

This hospital consists of 33 Oxygen beds and 20 general beds:

‘Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Covid Hospital’ has 33 oxygen beds and 20 general beds. Dr. Salim Altekar, Dr. Kishor Chipole, Girish Ghag, Kunal Tingre, Aparna Sathe played a vital role in setting up this hospital.

Dr. Ashish Bharati, Pune Municipal Corporation Health Chief and Dr. Siddharth Dhende, Former Deputy Mayor and Dr. Amol Devalekar helped a lot in establishing this Covid Hospital.

“Through the Patient Rights Council, for the past several years, we have been working to offer good quality facilities to patients at other hospitals at reasonable and fair rates. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Covid Hospital will also meet the needs of the patients in a similar way,” said Chavan.
