Court rejects bail plea of former judge Karnan

Former HC judge CS Karnan had posted a derogatory video on social media, saying that some judges of the Supreme Court and the High Court had sexually abused a female court staff.

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail plea of the former HC judge, Justice CS Karnan over the offensive videos posted on social media against his colleagues.

However, the former judge, who has been facing a jail term of two years at Puzhal prison, Chennai, has apologized for his actions, but the court denied his request.

Earlier, at least ten lawyers of the Madras High Court wrote a letter to Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde, against the former High Court judge over the offensive videos posted on social media platforms.

According to the letter, Justice Karnan posted a derogatory video on social media, saying that some judges of the Supreme Court and the High Court had sexually abused a female court staff.

In the letter, it has mentioned that the 12 videos that are available on social media, which amounts to cognisable offences under the law for the prevention of sexual harassment of women at workplace and have to be taken down.

"This is contrary to IPC sections 292 and 354A and 506 and IT Act. Therefore, demanded stern action to be taken against him", read the letter.
