Greta Thunberg not named in FIR, probe only against 'toolkit': Delhi Police

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Thursday refuted media reports that suggested an FIR had been filed against teen climate activist Greta Thunberg over her tweets in support of the farmers' stir.

Addressing a press conference, Praveer Ranjan, Special Commissioner of Police (CP), said: "We have not named anybody in the FIR, it is only against the creators of the toolkit which is a matter of investigation and Delhi Police will be investigating that case."

"Sections in FIR are 124 A IPC - spreading disaffection against the government of India, it is regarding sedition; 153 A - promoting hatred amongst various communities on social/cultural/religious grounds; and 153 and 120 B for criminal conspiracy to give shape to such a plan," Ranjan added.

Meanwhile, Thunberg today posted an updated toolkit on farmers protest, claiming that the previous document that she deleted was outdated.

This comes after Greta, 18, was trolled over her tweets on the farmers' stir, which included a toolkit (document) which talked about widespread protests across the world over the issue. As Twitter erupted, the access to the document was restricted and the post deleted.

According to reports, the document in Thunberg's tweet had details about the January 26 protests and other street protests. The screenshots of the documents were doing the rounds on social media.

Thunberg later deleted and posted a fresh toolkit on farmers' protest, claiming that the previous document (which created the controversy) was outdated.

She took to the Twitter and said, "Here’s an updated toolkit by people on the ground in Indian if you want to help. (They removed their previous document as it was outdated.) #StandWithFarmers #FarmersProtest. "

In the new toolkit, the young climate activist asked people to tweet, call/email government representatives asking them to take action. She also suggested signing online petitions and taking action to divest from fossil fuel industries.

Besides, a plethora of other actions have been suggested by Greta.

Thunberg and US Vice President Kamala Harris' niece were among several people from the international community who have come out in support of the farmers' protest.

Their remarks came soon after international pop star Rihanna shared a news article highlighting the Centre's crackdown on the farmers by cutting off internet services in many regions.

This sparked controversy and along with the Government of India, several Bollywood stars and cricketers reacted to her post calling it "propaganda" to defame India's image in the global arena.

Former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar said that India's sovereignty cannot be compromised and external forces cannot become participants.

"India's sovereignty cannot be compromised. External forces can be spectators but not participants. Indians know India and should decide for India. Let's remain united as a nation," Tendulkar said in a tweet adding hashtags #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda."

Meanwhile, India in a strongly worded statement said that it is unfortunate to see vested interest groups trying to enforce their agenda on these protests, and derail them.

A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said that some of these vested interest groups have also tried to mobilise international support against India. Instigated by such fringe elements, Mahatma Gandhi statues have been desecrated in parts of the world. This is extremely disturbing for India and civilised society everywhere.

Indian police forces have handled these protests with the utmost restraint. It may be noted that hundreds of men and women serving in the police have been physically attacked, and in some cases stabbed and seriously wounded, the statement added.

"We would like to emphasise that these protests must be seen in the context of India’s democratic ethos and polity, and the efforts of the Government and the concerned farmer groups to resolve the impasse," the MEA said in a statement.

"Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained, and a proper understanding of the issues at hand be undertaken," it further added.

External affairs minister Jaishankar slammed Rihanna and Greta for their remarks over the farmers' protest.

"Motivated campaigns targeting India will never succeed. We have the self-confidence today to hold our own. This India will push back," EAM Jaishankar said in a tweet.
