Mumbai: The renaming of Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar in the state is currently heating politics. In the ruling Mahavikas Aghadi government, Congress, which is one of the constituent parties, has opposed the renaming of Aurangabad.
Congress state president Balasaheb Thorat has taken the issue of renaming directly to the General Directorate. Many organizations in the state have expressed displeasure over the role of the Congress. There have also been agitations against Thorat by Maratha community organizations. However, Congress is still adamant against renaming the cities.
Speaking on the issue of renaming Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar, Thorat said that Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is our adored deity. Let's not play politics of naming using his name, let's all work together for the development of Aurangabad. Also, the Mahavikas Aghadi government in the state runs on at least the same program. The fundamentals of the Indian Constitution are at the core of at least a similar program. Therefore, we reiterate that we strongly oppose the renaming of any city for the sake of maintaining social harmony.
Directorate General of Information and Public Relations role in the change of name
It should be noted that the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations should not rename cities, government work is a legal document. Renaming cities are not part of the Mahavikas Aghadi's program. In such words, Revenue Minister Thorat has also slammed the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations.
Aurangabad is referred to as Sambhajinagar while the Directorate General of Information and Public Relations is announcing the Cabinet decision on the government medical college in Aurangabad on the CMO's Twitter handle. Reacting to this, Thorat has said that the Congress is strongly opposed to the naming of cities.
What's the argument all about?
The Shiv Sena has proposed to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar. This is the old demand of Shiv Sena for renaming. However, some party organizations alleged that the issue was being brought before the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation. Congress has directly opposed the renaming of the cities.
However, as the Congress is a constituent party of the Congress Mahavikas Aghadi government, the BJP did not miss this opportunity to trap the Shiv Sena in politics and sidelined the Shiv Sena from opposing the Congress. Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said that Shiv Sena will not change its role.
The renaming of Aurangabad is just part of the paperwork order. Saying that Balasaheb Thackeray has already renamed the city, what were you doing when there was a BJP government at the Center and in the states and a Yogi government in the north changing the names of cities? The BJP was questioned about these developments.
Opposition from NCP too
The proposal to rename cities is not on our agenda. We rejected this proposal 20 years ago. Nawab Malik has made it clear that we do not believe in renaming developed cities. Also, there is opposition from Congress to change the names of cities.
Though there is talk in the political circles that this will affect the Mahavikas Aghadi government, the leaders of all the three parties are saying that it will not have any effect on the Mahavikas Aghadi government. However, the political controversy that started with the renaming of the city will simmer like the renaming of the university, won't it? Such fears are being expressed.
