Chennai: A US-returned elderly couple were killed by their driver and his accomplice before the two decamped with Rs 20 lakh cash and 8 kilos of gold and other jewellery from their house in Brindavan Nagar in Mylapore, Chennai.
The deceased elderly couple were identified as Srikanth (60) and his wife Anuradha (55). The accused Lal Krishna, their driver, and his accomplice Ravi, as per police, killed the couple at their house in Mylapore on Saturday and buried their bodies at the couple's farmhouse outside Chennai.
The two then tried to flee with Rs 20 lakh cash and jewellery including 8 kilograms of gold and 50 kilograms of silver but were intercepted by Prakasam district police in Andhra Pradesh on the national highway on a tip-off.
The couple returned to India on Saturday from the US where they were visiting their daughter, Sunanda. It was she who made a call to her parents to check on them only to find that their phones were switched off. Sunanda immediately contacted her relative Divya in Indranagar. Divya along with her husband Ramesh went to Srikanth's home at 12.30 pm and found their house was locked.
Later, the police were informed after which Mylapore Deputy Commissioner Gautaman ordered an investigation. During the probe, it came to the fore that the couple had been picked up by their car driver Lal Krishna from the airport. Lal Krishna and his friend Ravi had already fled from Chennai. The two were intercepted by Police at the Tanguturu Tollgate on National Highway 16. They were taken into custody and brought to Tanguturu police station for investigation.
