New Delhi: The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a plea which sought directions to the government to formulate scheme so that advocates do not have to pay rent for their chambers during the lockdown.
"Tomorrow engineers will come, architects will come. How can we give special dispensation to lawyers? This is unreasonable. There may be old ladies, aged persons as landlords. How can we say this?," questioned the bench.
The Supreme Court Bar Association argued in the court that they do not seek non-payment of rent but directions which declare that non payment could not be made a ground for eviction. The bench responded saying that during the lockdown the landlords and tenants are already renegotiating the contracts and they do not wish to enter in the issue.

The petitioner told the court that they will withdraw the plea from the court and make a representation before the government.
