Police rescues one from clutches of witch hunters in Assam

An elderly woman was found to be tied to an electric pole and tortured in Golaghat district in Assam as part of the witch-hunting practice. Nobody has been arrested yet.

Dergaon: Assam police rescued a woman from the clutches of witch hunters in Golaghat district.The incident took place at Dergaon Number 12 Misamara Bagan Line where a group of villagers had allegedly tortured the elderly woman as part of witch hunting.

Police said that the locals had tied the woman to an electric pole and tortured her. Police swung into action immediately after receiving the information and rescued the woman.

She was rushed to the Dhemaji civil hospital immediately. Police said that the condition of the woman is critical. As the police investigation is underway, no one has been arrested till now.

According to statistics of the Assam Government, 107 people were killed in witch-hunting related incidents in the state between 2011 and 2019. The highest number of witch-hunting deaths was recorded in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).

It should also be noted that the Assam Government had passed the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act 2015 to wage war against the social evil but the incidents of witch-hunting are still prevalent in some remote pockets of the state.
