New Delhi: In view of coronavirus crisis, a plea has been filed in Supreme court seeking to restore 4G internet services in the Union Territory, as the available 2G internet services are hampering the education of children in the region.
The petition, filed by 'Private Schools Association J&K', challenged an order issued by the Jammu and Kashmir administration on March 26 stating only 2G mobile internet services will be available to residents till April 3.
It alleged that the lack of 4G connectivity for internet in Jammu and Kashmir is infringing the fundamental right to education.
“Right to Education is the most important of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India which is further empowered by the right to use the Internet as a medium of gaining, obtaining and dissemination of knowledge. Internet as a medium of imparting education, through online courses and classes has become imperative in the present times when the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir continues to be under severe restrictions,” states the plea.
The plea further stated that 2G speed is not only proving to be an obstacle for students in Jammu & Kashmir but also creating a great hindrance in the dissemination of information during the lockdown.
Earlier this week, on Thursday, the top Court had heard another plea seeking to revoke the internet speed restrictions in the valley by the Foundation for Media Professionals. The Court has issued notice to the J&K government on the plea returnable after two weeks.
