Assam tops in rape cases in NCRB report 2018

The NCRB report for 2018 shows that Assam recorded the highest number of rapes (66) in India in 2018. The state is followed by Madhya Pradesh (46), Uttar Pradesh (41) and Haryana (26) among others. The figure might be more as many of the cases goes unregistered

New Delhi: At a time when BJP led central government is giving much more attention towards the northeast and especially Assam, the state, as per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), is unsafe for women with the highest number of rapes and cybercrimes.

The NCRB report for 2018 shows that Assam recorded the highest number of rapes (66) in India in 2018. The state is followed by Madhya Pradesh (46), Uttar Pradesh (41) and Haryana (26) among others.

"The figure might be more as many of the cases goes unregistered," said a senior government official.

Interestingly, there was a drastic rise in the number of rapes cases in 2018 in comparison to 2017. As per the NCRB report, 223 rape cases were registered across India in 2017 whereas the number went up to 291 in 2018.

In 2017, BJP led Uttar Pradesh topped the list with 64 rape cases. Assam was second in such heinous crime of rape with 27 registered cases.

Maharastra recorded 26 rape cases and Madhya Pradesh 21 in 2017.

Ironically, there was 31 percent spurt in cases of rape with murder in 2018 in comparison to 2017.

According to the NCRB report, Assam has also recorded maximum number of cyber offence against women in India.

Assam topped the list with 295 registered cyber crimes against women, Odisha comes second with 208 registered cases of cybercrimes.

The NCRB report said that women and children were also among the more vulnerable sections to crime in 2018. The crime rate per lakh women population is 58.8 in 2018 in comparison to 57.9 percent in 2017.

In addition, most of the cyber crime. the area in 2018 was related to sexual harassment of women in social media.

The NCRB report further said, along with Assam, states like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim are yet to give clarification in data related to other crimes.

"So the data from these states may be treated as provisional," the NCRB report released recently said.
