The BJP blamed "stubbornness" of its estranged ally and political rival Shiv Sena, without taking its name, for imposition of President's Rule in Maharashtra.

The Supreme Court registry is yet to take a call on placing the petition filed by the Shiv Sena before Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on their plea for according an urgent hearing on Tuesday itself.
An official said that there is some defect in the petition and the judicial branch of the apex court registry is working with the advocate-on-record who has filed the petition to cure the defect. The official said that the decision to place the matter before the CJI will be taken only after the defects are cured.

Governor recommends President's rule in Maharashtra
Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Tuesday recommended President's rule in the state.
As per a statement tweeted by Koshyari's office, "He is satisfied that the government cannot be carried on in accordance with the Constitution, (and therefore) has today submitted a report as contemplated by provision of Article 356 of the Constitution."
Article 356, commonly known as President's rule, deals with 'failure of constitutional machinery in the state'.
Earlier today, the Union Cabinet also recommended President's rule in Maharashtra where no political party has been able to form a government after the Assembly polls last month.

Sena moves SC against Guv's decision to decline more time
The Shiv Sena moved the Supreme Court against Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's decision to decline extension of time sought by the Uddhav Thackeray-led party for submitting the "requisite letter of support" to prove its claim to form a government on Monday night.
The Sena, which is trying to form a coalition government with the support of the NCP and the Congress, had failed to secure the letters from both the parties.
Sena leaders had claimed that the governor had granted 72-hours to the BJP (105), the single largest party, to stake claim to form a government. The BJP on Sunday declined to form a government for want of numbers.
Advocate Sunil Fernandez has filed the plea for Shiv Sena.

NCP meets to discuss govt formation in Maharashtra
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar, his nephew and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other senior leaders and Legislators of the party held a crucial meeting here on Tuesday to discuss the government formation issue.
Prior to the meeting, Ajit Pawar indicated that if the NCP managed to get the magic figure of 145 in the 288-member Assembly, it could form the government, but cautioned: 'Have patience'.
The party is hoping for the support of the Congress, the Shiv Sena, which broke off from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA, independents and smaller parties.
However, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which has two legislators, has decided against supporting any coalition that includes the Shiv Sena and Congress as the constituents.
Pawar also said that the party was awaiting formal communication from the Congress before it could finalise its strategy and report to Governor B. S. Koshyari at Raj Bhavan before the 8.30 p.m. deadline on Tuesday.
Since Saturday, politics has moved into high gear after the BJP -- the single largest party with 105 legislators - expressed its inability to form the government.
On Sunday, the Governor invited the Shiv Sena with 56 legislators to form the government. But, it could not provide the letters of support from the Congress and NCP even as it claimed 'in principle' support from them. The Sena sought more time from the Governor, who, however, declined the request.
Thereafter, late on Monday night, the Governor invited the NCP, the third-largest party with 54 legislators to make an attempt to form the government.
Now, all eyes are on the response of the Congress, which is holding a separate meeting of its top leaders in New Delhi, before the government formation logjam can be resolved.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday spoke to NCP chief Sharad Pawar and authorised three senior party leaders to hold further talks on the issue of government formation in Maharashtra.
As hectic deliberations continued, Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge and K C Venugopal would be leaving for Mumbai later in the day for holding discussions with NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
Earlier in the morning, Sonia Gandhi again spoke to Pawar over the telephone and asked her party leaders to meet Pawar in Mumbai.

With the Congress taking it slow on government formation in Maharashtra, the Aam Aadmi Party's state leader Preeti Sharma Menon on Tuesday said the Congress leadership always puts the party before the nation and claimed that they are giving Maharashtra "on a platter" to the BJP.

The Supreme Court registry is yet to take a call on placing the petition filed by the Shiv Sena before Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on their plea for according an urgent hearing on Tuesday itself.
An official said that there is some defect in the petition and the judicial branch of the apex court registry is working with the advocate-on-record who has filed the petition to cure the defect. CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury questioned Maharashtra Governor BS Koshyari's move of recommending President's rule in the state even before the expiry of the deadline given to NCP.

Governor recommends President's rule in Maharashtra
Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Tuesday recommended President's rule in the state.
As per a statement tweeted by Koshyari's office, "He is satisfied that the government cannot be carried on in accordance with the Constitution, (and therefore) has today submitted a report as contemplated by provision of Article 356 of the Constitution."
Article 356, commonly known as President's rule, deals with 'failure of constitutional machinery in the state'.
Earlier today, the Union Cabinet also recommended President's rule in Maharashtra where no political party has been able to form a government after the Assembly polls last month.

Sena moves SC against Guv's decision to decline more time
The Shiv Sena moved the Supreme Court against Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's decision to decline extension of time sought by the Uddhav Thackeray-led party for submitting the "requisite letter of support" to prove its claim to form a government on Monday night.
The Sena, which is trying to form a coalition government with the support of the NCP and the Congress, had failed to secure the letters from both the parties.
Sena leaders had claimed that the governor had granted 72-hours to the BJP (105), the single largest party, to stake claim to form a government. The BJP on Sunday declined to form a government for want of numbers.
Advocate Sunil Fernandez has filed the plea for Shiv Sena.

NCP meets to discuss govt formation in Maharashtra
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) President Sharad Pawar, his nephew and former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and other senior leaders and Legislators of the party held a crucial meeting here on Tuesday to discuss the government formation issue.
Prior to the meeting, Ajit Pawar indicated that if the NCP managed to get the magic figure of 145 in the 288-member Assembly, it could form the government, but cautioned: 'Have patience'.
The party is hoping for the support of the Congress, the Shiv Sena, which broke off from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA, independents and smaller parties.
However, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which has two legislators, has decided against supporting any coalition that includes the Shiv Sena and Congress as the constituents.
Pawar also said that the party was awaiting formal communication from the Congress before it could finalise its strategy and report to Governor B. S. Koshyari at Raj Bhavan before the 8.30 p.m. deadline on Tuesday.
Since Saturday, politics has moved into high gear after the BJP -- the single largest party with 105 legislators - expressed its inability to form the government.
On Sunday, the Governor invited the Shiv Sena with 56 legislators to form the government. But, it could not provide the letters of support from the Congress and NCP even as it claimed 'in principle' support from them. The Sena sought more time from the Governor, who, however, declined the request.
Thereafter, late on Monday night, the Governor invited the NCP, the third-largest party with 54 legislators to make an attempt to form the government.
Now, all eyes are on the response of the Congress, which is holding a separate meeting of its top leaders in New Delhi, before the government formation logjam can be resolved.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday spoke to NCP chief Sharad Pawar and authorised three senior party leaders to hold further talks on the issue of government formation in Maharashtra.
As hectic deliberations continued, Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Mallikarjun Kharge and K C Venugopal would be leaving for Mumbai later in the day for holding discussions with NCP chief Sharad Pawar.
Earlier in the morning, Sonia Gandhi again spoke to Pawar over the telephone and asked her party leaders to meet Pawar in Mumbai.

Congress giving Maharashtra 'on a platter' to BJP: AAP
With the Congress taking it slow on government formation in Maharashtra, the Aam Aadmi Party's state leader Preeti Sharma Menon on Tuesday said the Congress leadership always puts the party before the nation and claimed that they are giving Maharashtra "on a platter" to the BJP.
"Congress leadership always puts their party before the nation. In Lok Sabha, they stubbornly refused regional alliances and helped BJP sweep. Now they are giving Maharashtra on a platter to the BJP. It's moribund attitude will decimate it soon," Menon tweeted.
She also said that the Congress MLAs in Maharashtra should join Sharad Pawar, President of Nationalist Congress Party, adding "it's really time for Congress to die".
