Lockdown: UP mosque congregation heckles, pelts stone at police

A congregation at a mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district on Thursday night allegedly pelted stones and heckled local police officers as they tried to stop them from gathering amid a nationwide lockdown to flatten the curve of coronavirus pandemic.

Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh): At least six people were arrested after a congregation at a mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh district on Thursday night allegedly pelted stones and heckled local police officers as they tried to stop them from gathering amid a nationwide lockdown to flatten the curve of coronavirus pandemic.

Upon receiving information about the ruckus, Aligarh Additional Superintendent of Police along with his team of officers rushed to the spot and tried to mitigate the situation.

“A few people had gathered at a mosque to offer namaz. When the local police got to know about the congregation they rushed to the spot and tried to make them understand the norms of the lockdown. Agitated over police interference, the people started heckling the officers and pelted stones at them. When we got to know about the ruckus we rushed to the spot and arrested a few people,” said Pankaj Shrivastav, Additional SP, Aligarh.

While an investigation into the matter is underway, there are no reports of injuries sustained by either party.
