On the occasion of 116th birth anniversary of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and other leaders paid floral tribute to him at Vijay Ghat.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary, saying he epitomised simplicity and lived for the welfare of our nation.

The prime minister went to Vijay Ghat, a memorial of Shastri, to pay his tributes.

"Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji was humble and firm. He epitomised simplicity and lived for the welfare of our nation. We remember him on his Jayanti with a deep sense of gratitude for everything he has done for India," Modi tweeted.

President Ram Nath Kovind also took twitter to wished the nation on the occasion. He tweeted, "Today we remember former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary. A great son of India, he served our nation with exceptional dedication. His fundamental role in the Green Revolution, the White Revolution and wartime leadership continue to inspire the nation."

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu also paid tributes to former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary, saying he steered the nation through critical times with his exemplary leadership.

"Shri Shastri was an epitome of simplicity, humility and wisdom. He steered the nation through critical times with his exemplary leadership," the Vice President Secretariat tweeted quoting Naidu.

Family of late prime minister paid tribute to him at Vijay Ghat on the occasion. Lal Bahadur Shastri’s sons Sunil Shastri and Anil Shastri paid him floral tribute.

Shastri, the second prime minister of India, was born in 1904 in Uttar Pradesh. Shastri served as PM of India from 1964 to 1966.

The nation is celebrating 116th birth anniversary of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on October 02.
