82 new COVID-19 cases and 48 recovered cases reported in Himachal Pradesh till 5 pm on Wednesday.

According to the state Health Department, the tally in the state pushed to 3,579, including 1,214 active cases, 2,321 recoveries and 16 deaths till date.

Former Minister A Elumalai succumbs to COVID-19

Former Local Administration Minister of Puducherry A Elumalai succumbed to COVID-19 in centrally administered JIPMER on Wednesday.

Elumalai (53) had tested positive for the infection and was admitted to JIPMER on Tuesday, Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar told Media.

Former Chhattisgarh CM's wife tests positive 

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh's wife Veena Singh tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

"My wife Mrs. Veena Singh's report of COVID-19 is positive. She is admitted to hospital on advice of doctors. Along with this, I and other members of my family will also undergo the test. Whoever has come in contact with us, should also remain isolated and go for test," Raman Singh wrote in Hindi.

481 more cases in Puducherry 

A total of 481 new COVID-19 cases, 138 recoveries, and 5 deaths were reported from Puducherry on Wednesday, according to the Union Territory's (UT) Health Department.

As of 10 am on Wednesday, the total number of coronavirus cases in Puducherry stood at 6,381, including 2,616 active cases and 3,669 recoveries. So far, 96 lives have been claimed by the infection in the UT.

UP reports 4,475 new cases, 54 fresh deaths

Uttar Pradesh reported on Wednesday 4,475 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours, while 54 more people died due to the infection.

Additional Chief Secretary (Medical and Health) Amit Mohan Prasad said the total number of cases in the state now stands at 1,36,238 and fatalities at 2,230. He put the number of fresh cases in the past 24 hours at 4,583.

"So far, 84,661 people have been treated and discharged. There are now 49,347 active COVID-19 cases in the state, of which 21,758 are in home isolation," Prasad said.

The tally now reaches to 1,48,504 and the death toll mounts to 4,153.

14 women prisoners found positive in Madhya Pradesh

Days after they were shifted to Shahdol jail from prison in Singrauli district in Madhya Pradesh, 14 women inmates have been found to be coronavirus positive, a senior official said on Wednesday.

They were shifted to Shahdol Medical College on Tuesday evening, said Shahdol district jail superintendent GK Neti.

The women inmates, including 13 undertrials and a convict, were shifted from Baidhan jail on August 9 as it was overcrowded, he said.

He said one of the infected prisoners has a 18-month-old child with her, whose samples were taken and report is awaited.

A total of 264 more Maharashtra police personnel tested positive for COVID-19 while 3 died in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 121.

The total number of police personnel infected in the state at 11,392, out of which 9,187 have recovered and 2,084 are active cases.

Odisha records 1876 new COVID cases today

1876 new positive cases, 1785 recoveries and 9 deaths have been reported in Odisha on Wednesday.

According to the State Health Department, the total number of cases in the state now stands at 50,672, including 15509 active cases, 34805 recoveries and 305 deaths.

Gujarat records 1,118 new Covid cases, 23 more deaths

Gujarat's coronavirus tally reached 73,238 on Tuesday with 1,118 new cases and the death toll rose to 2,697 with 23 fresh fatalities.

Meanwhile, a total of 1,140 patients were discharged on Tuesday, taking the total number to 56,416.

The state currently has 14,125 active cases, out of which 79 critical patients are still on ventilator.

The state has recorded 11,805 positive cases in August so far, with a daily average of over 1,000 cases.

Surat, which has over taken Ahmedabad as the worst affected city, saw 236 new cases, while Ahmedabad was second with 150, and Vadodara, which is recording 100 plus cases for over a week now, was in third place, with 111.

Lucknow records highest spike of 831 Covid cases in a day

Lucknow has recorded an all-time high of 831 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, as it crossed the 14,000 mark. Medical experts have said that if immediate steps are not taken the state capital may soon cross the 1,000-mark in a day.

Tuesday's figure took the caseload to 14,221 since the outbreak on March 11, of which 42 per cent (6,043 cases) have been reported till date in August.

About 7,317 patients have also recovered till date, but since the transmission rate is higher than recovery, active patients have swelled to 6,743. Though asymptomatic cases are allowed home isolation, the increase in active cases added to the pressure on Covid hospitals.

Prof T.N. Dhole, senior virologist and ex-professor at SGPGI, said moisture in the atmosphere in monsoon is abetting the spread of the virus.

"The surge will continue and we may see more than 1,000 cases daily by August end. The transmission rate would peak in October," he explained.

New Delhi: As many as 60,963 new coronavirus cases in India in the last 24 hours, taking the total cases to over 23 lakhs, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

834 new coronavirus deaths reported in India and the cumulative toll has reached 46,091.

The total number of coronavirus cases has climbed to 23,29,638 including 6,43,948 active cases, 16,39,599 cured/discharged/migrated.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 7,33,439 samples, the highest so far were tested for COVID-19 on August 11.

Over 2.60 crores samples have been tested so far.
