Hospital staff tied Covid patient to cot, says family

A female Covid-19 patient named Kunji Beevi who was admitted to Thrissur Medical College was seen tied to a cot in a video released by her family. Alleging inhuman behaviour Beevi's family filed a complaint to the District Medical Officer and the Principal of Thrissur Medical College.

Thrissur (Kerala): After the alleged incident of medical negligence at Kalamassery Medical College, allegations of medical negligence and inhuman behaviour were raised against the healthcare workers of Thrissur Medical College Hospital on Friday.

It was alleged that an aged woman COVID-19 patient was tied up to the cot. The woman, who attempted to get up, fell down from the cot and suffered serious injuries.

The woman’s kin lodged complaints with the District Medical Officer and the Medical College Principal, following the incident. The family of the woman will also lodge a complaint with Health Minister KK Shailaja.

Kunji Beevi of Puraliyil House, in Kadangodu, in Thrissur had tested positive for COVID-19 along with others in the family on October 18. The family was shifted to the COVID First-Line Treatment Centre (CFLTC) in Kuttanellur.

Later, as Beevi’s blood pressure increased and subsequently she was shifted to the Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. However, the family alleged that her daughter-in-law was not allowed to go with her to the Medical College Hospital by the authorities.

Beevi's family claimed that she was fatigued and weak when she was admitted to Medical College Hospital. Later the hospital staff tied her up to a cot. While trying to get up from the bed, she fell down on the floor and got badly injured. She has sustained injuries on her head and her eyes.

Beevi’s family alleged that she has seven sutures for a deep cut wound, besides other contusions and bruises under the eyes and other parts of the face. Her teeth have also started shaking in the impact of the fall.

Her family says she has blood clots in different parts of her face due to the contusions she suffered in the fall. Another patient in the same ward had recorded the visuals and sent to her relatives.
