Court awards death sentence in Doctor Deben Dutta's lynching case

Dr Deben Dutta was mob lynched on August 31 ,2019 and later he died in Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

Jorhat: The District and Sessions Court in Jorhat awarded death sentence to the tea garden worker and life imprisonment to 24 others in Doctor Deben Dutta lynching case. On October 13, Judge Robin Phukan convicted 25 tea workers under Sections 302/149, 342/149, 353/148, 353/149 of Indian Penal Code.

The court awarded death sentence to convict Sanjay Rajowar, the kingpin of the brutal murder. The court sentenced life imprisonment to 24 other convicts including Sanjib Rajowar, Suresh Rajowar, Ajoy Majhi, Upendra Bhumij, Ratul Rajowar, Bablu Rajowar, Anil Majhi, Bijoy Rajowar, Bolin Rajowar, Dipak Rajowar, Milon Rajowar, Rinku Majhi, Mishilal Majhi, Sibcharan Mahali, Debeswar Rajowar, Kartik Bhumiz, Sanjoy Rajowar, Kalicharan Mahali, Rameswar Bhumiz, Siba Mahali, Rahul Rajowar, Kalanag Majhi, Manoj Majhi, Rinku Bakti.

Police had arrested 32 tea garden workers for lynching Dutta, after 22 days and filed a 602-page charge sheet against them to the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Jorhat on September 24 last year. The mob attacked and killed Dutta for delaying treatment of a plantation worker, Somra Majhi. Dutta, a resident of Jogduar area in Jorhat district, succumbed to his injuries at the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) on August 31 last year.
