EC announces dates for legislative council by-polls in 3 states

The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for by-elections for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh legislative councils. Elections will take place on January 28 and counting will be carried out at 5 pm on the same day.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India on Wednesday announced the schedule for by-elections for one seat in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council and two casual vacancies in Bihar Legislative Council. The Election Commission (EC) also announced the schedule for the by-election to 12 seats of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. Their term is expiring on January 30, 2021.

Elections will take place on January 28 and counting will be carried out on the same day.

The vacancy in Andra Pradesh was created after resignation of Pothula Sunitha in November 2020 and the term was up to March 2023. The two vacancies in Bihar Legislative Council are created after resignation of Sushil Kumar Modi and election of Vinod Narayan Jha to Bihar Legislative Assembly.

The Election Commission of India has also directed the respective Chief Secy of these states to depute a senior officer from state to ensure that the extant instructions regarding Covid-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting elections.

The notification for these seats will be issued on January 11 while January 18 would be the last date for filing nominations. Nominations can be withdrawn by January 21 and polls will take place on January 28 from 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will begin at 5 pm.
