Asian Security Conference postponed amid coronavirus threat

A two-day conference organised by the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis (IDSA), which was to start from Thursday,has been postponed due to the coronavirus threat.

According to the schedule, the conference, which had seminars on a range of security issues in Asia, was to be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah.

"Due to the prevailing global situation with regard to COVID-19, it has been decided to postpone the 21st Asian Security Conference (ASC) to a later date. Fresh dates for the Conference will be conveyed in due course," the IDSA said in an email to the participants.

Health Ministry releases comic for COVID-19 awareness among kids 

Health Ministry on Wednesday released a comic developed by PGIMER and Panjab University on Coronavirus to make the children aware and make them understand how to prevent infection.

This comic 'Kids, Vaayu and Corona: Who wins the fight?' is a brainchild of Dr.Ravindra Khaiwal and Dr.Suman Mor.

"There are growing concerns and perceived threat about the Coronavirus among ordinary citizens. The parent should talk to the children and resolve their queries, so they do not panic. However, sometimes parents might be busy, and they might not be able to resolve their questions. Inspired by my own children's queries, I wrote this comic," said Dr.Ravindra Khaiwal, Additional Professor of Environment Health, School of Public Health, Department of Community Medicine PGIMER, Chandigarh.

He also mentioned that the suggestion from children helped to make it more tempting to read and learn.

Telangana govt issues standard operating protocol for IT companies

The Telangana government is actively engaging with the industry bodies to review and monitor the coronavirus spread, said VC Sajjanar, CP, Cyberabad and Nodal officer.

The state government had appointed the Police Commissioner, Cyberabad as the Nodal officer to review the situation in IT Hubs of Cyberabad and accordingly a Coordination Committee was formed involving Health Department, GHMC, TSIIC, ITE&C, SCSC, Hysea and Nasscom.

Sajjanar said, "The standard operating protocol (SOP) document has been written will equip all IT companies/IT Parks with guidelines to deal with such situations."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that three suspected coronavirus cases in Kolkata are under observation in a hospital.

While addressing a press conference in Nabanna earlier today, Banerjee said: "Three suspected coronavirus cases are under observation in ID Hospital. Their test results are awaited."

4 people tested positive for COVID-19 in K'taka stable

All the four people tested positive for coronavirus in Karnataka so far, are stable and are recovering in the isolation facility, said Government of Karnataka on Wednesday.  

"Four COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Karnataka till date. All four cases are stable and recovering in isolation facility. Till now, 98,401 passengers have been screened in Karnataka," said Government of Karnataka in a statement.

Kerala continues to be on high alert over COVID-19

Kerala continues to be on a high alert with more test results of COVID-19 suspects expected soon, though the state has not reported a fresh positive case. So far the tally of positive cases stands at 14, which includes 7 at Pathanamthitta, four at Kottayam and three at Kochi .

A corona-positive aged couple were moved to the critical care unit of the Kottayam Medical College Hospital on Wednesday.

According to the state health authorities in the state, 259 people are under isolation in various hospitals, while 1,236 are quarantined in their homes. Health authorities were on tenterhooks, but heaved a sigh of relief after 10 test results from Pathanamthitta and three cases from Kottayam showed negative results.

294 out of 948 evacuees are in quarantine but asymptomatic for COVID-19: Health Ministry

The Union Health Ministry on Wednesday said that out of 948 people evacuated by India, 654 have been found negative for coronavirus and discharged, while 294 people are in quarantine but are asymptomatic.

Among the 948 evacuees, 900 are Indian citizens and 48 belong to different nationalities including Maldives, Myanmar, Bangladesh, China, USA, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, South Africa and Peru, the Health Ministry tweeted.

A meeting of the Group of Union Ministers at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was held today to discuss the situation arising out of the outbreak of coronavirus.

Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted: "Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan reviewed the status and preparedness regarding the spread of coronavirus."

All educational institutes in Jammu and Kashmir shut till March 31

The Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered closure of all educational institutes across the union territory till March 31 as a precautionary measure amid the coronavirus scare.

Cinema halls in all the 10 districts of Jammu division will also remain closed till March 31, officials said.

While only one person has tested positive for the contagious coronavirus in the union territory, one man with high viral-load has been reported and his samples have been sent to the National Centre for Disease Control in New Delhi, they said.

Karnataka government  launches coronavirus info campaign

The Karnataka government on Wednesday started a campaign called 'Namaste over Handshake' that encourages people to greet in the traditional Indian style, to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

The campaign also includes health advice on how people can protect themselves from the infection by adopting hygiene practices such as regularly washing hands to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

As part of the campaign, the state health and family welfare department has uploaded a poster on the social media, featuring a 'Bharatnatyam' dancer draped in a red saree saying 'Namaste'.

"Use Namasthe to greet others, fight against corona" read a message on the poster online.

The poster has health helpline numbers (104 and 011- 23978046) for public queries on the viral disease, which has claimed 4,251 lives worldwide.

Odisha Assembly issues safety guidelines on novel coronavirus

The Odisha Assembly on Wednesday issued safety guidelines to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, an official said.

It asked the lawmakers and staff of the Assembly to wash their hands frequently and keep the environment clean in order to prevent the spread of the deadly virus, the official said.

The Assembly secretariat also imposed restrictions on the use of fingerprint-based biometric attendance during House proceedings.  In order to maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the working space, furniture and equipment including tables, chairs, computers, phones and other assets are to be cleaned at least six times a day with disinfectants and sanitisers, the guideline said.

First coronavirus positive man in TN tests negative, no fresh confirmed cases: Minister

 The 45-year-old man who tested positive for coronavirus has recovered with results of his samples coming out negative and as of now there are no confirmed virus cases in Tamil Nadu, State Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar said on Wednesday. The speedy recovery was possible only because of meticulous treatment and expertise of the state health department to handle exigencies, the minister posted on social media.

The man, who recently returned from Oman, tested positive on March 7, making him the first confirmed COVID-19 case in the state. 

"As of now, there are no confirmed coronavirus cases and there are no more pending samples for testing at labs as all have tested negative," he said.

Two employees working with IT companies Dell and Mindtree have been tested positive for coronavirus, according to company statements.The Dell employee had returned from the US, including a visit to Texas while the Mindtree employee also had a travel history abroad, the two companies said in separate statements.

"We can confirm two employees of Dell India were tested for the COVID-19 virus following their return home from the United States – including a visit to our headquarters in Round Rock, Texas.  

One employee tested negative; another tested positive and has since been placed in quarantine," Dell Technologies said.The company said it continues to take steps to protect Dell Technologies team members and communities by adhering to the health and safety guidelines from the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control, and coordinating with local health officials.

Mindtree said that one of its employees returning from an overseas trip tested positive for COVID-19 on March 10, 2020.

Govt restricts travel from coronavirus-affected countries

New Delhi: In view of COVID-19 outbreak, the Government of India on Tuesday issued an additional travel advisory imposing travel restrictions on persons arriving to India from coronavirus-affected countries.

The countries are Italy, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Iran, Malaysia, France, Spain and Germany.

The government informed about the suspension of visas of foreign nationals from the aforementioned countries and those with travel history in these nations on or after February 1.

"With respect to restrictions on visa, all regular visas which have been granted to nationals of France, Germany and Spain on or before March 11 and where these foreigners have not entered India stand suspended," the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in a release.

"Regular visa granted to all foreign nationals who have travel history to the aforementioned countries on or after February 1 and who have not yet entered India also stands suspended," it added.
