New Delhi: Days after lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan held guilty of contempt of Supreme Court due to his tweet on Chief Justice of India SA Bobde, Congress party, on Thursday, has reacted over the matter by asserting that the law 'has to be even-handed, balanced and fair-minded'.

When asked about the matter, Congress MP and senior advocate, Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "The law has to be even-handed, balanced and fair-minded. There are former judges who have raised the issues and even now there is a demand for larger benches."

Earlier today, Bhushan told the apex court that he was 'pained' at being 'grossly misunderstood' and that he considered his tweets an attempt to discharge his highest duty. The Supreme Court has given him a time of two-three days to reconsider his statement.

However, he refused to apologize to the Court, saying, "My tweets need to be seen as an attempt for working for the betterment of Institution. Apologizing would also be a dereliction of my highest Duty. I do not ask for Mercy. I do not appeal to magnanimity. I cheerfully submit to any punishment that Court may impose."

Singhvi also tweeted for Prashant Bhushan, stating, "Achievement and criticism are friends or each other if your achievements increases then surely your criticisms will also rise. #SupremeCourtOfIndia #PrashantBhushan".

Congress spokesperson Udit Raj said in his tweet, "I'm proud of Prashant Bhushan who did not apologize in the Supreme Court. Judges are not infallible and truth expressed isn't contempt for which the SC proceeded. We promised to stand with him, did so, not in words, but our organisation Parisangh proved it in action."
