New Delhi: After 16 migrant labourers, sleeping on the railway track, were crushed to death by a goods train in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety Shailesh Yadav wrote a letter to Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav calling for abundant caution and urging him to issue necessary instructions to the Railway personnel to avoid reoccurrence of such accidents.

While expressing his condolences, the CCRS assured, "All-out efforts must be made to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future."

He also mentioned in his letter that the affected persons had gathered along the track under the impression that the train services have been discontinued due to COVID-19 lockdown.

"Furthermore, a false sense of security may have come into their minds about there being no trains run, whereas freight or parcel specials have been running from before and now migrant specials have also started plying," he added.

The Commission of Railway Safety, which comes under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, investigates all serious rail accidents. The Commissioner urged Railway Board chairman to issue necessary directions to zonal offices on this issue.

He told in his letter, "Under such circumstances, as abundant precautions, it is essential that all Railway personnel connected with train operation, maintenance and patrolling activities should be cautioned to immediately communicate any such occurrence, if noticed by them, to the nearest station, so that necessary action may be taken."
