I think everyone who believes in the Constitution of India is in unity today, said Supriya Shrinate, national spokesperson of Congress while giving her stance on CAA. 

"It is our democratic right to protest against the laws which we do not find to be good for everyone," she said, adding that connecting the issue with religion is not right. 

She further added, "These youngsters who are protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act actually motivates us. I applause in silence at the sheer courage and determination of our youth. They are standing together, irrespective of caste, religion, and opposing something as draconian as this."

She also urged the protestors to not spread violence.

"We will lose our fight if the path of violence is being used," she said.

Curfew to be relaxed for 16 hrs in Dibrugarh

Assam government has notified that curfew in the Dibrugarh district will be relaxed on Saturday for 16 hrs (from 6 AM to 10 PM) tomorrow.

Restriction imposed on all country spirit shops and other establishments retailing liquor has also been relaxed. Sale of liquor will be allowed only from 12 noon to 4 pm.

Priyanka joins protestors at India Gate, says CAA and NRC against poor

New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday jointed people protesting people at India Gate against the Citizenship Amendment Act and said the legislation and the proposed National Register of Citizens were against the poor.

Gandhi reached the India Gate in the evening where people were protesting over the CAA.

Talking to reporters briefly, she said the demonstrations against the Act should be peaceful.

"Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC are against the poor. They will be most affected by it. What will the daily-wage labourers do? Demonstrations should be held peacefully," she said.

Protests have been held in different parts of the country against the Act which grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and came to India on or before December 31, 2014.

Delhi: A large number of protesters gathered at Delhi Gate here to protest against the Citizenship Act.

As the protests turned violent, protesters torched a car in the area.

A protest march from the Jama Masjid from the Jantar Mantar was stopped by police earlier in the day.

According to Delhi Police officials, a large posse of security forces was deployed at the Delhi Gate, near the Bahadur Zafar Shah Marg, and barricades were installed at Daryaganj Chowk, around a kilometre away towards the Jama Masjid.

Police had also deployed anti-riot Vajra vehicle and water cannons, if needed, to disperse the crowd.

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was on Friday detained near Daryaganj during a protest march from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar, the outfit claimed.

According to Bhim Army, the police tried to detain Azad at Jama Masjid but he managed to getaway. However, he was detained later near Daryaganj, it said.

The massive protest march led by Bhim Army against the citizenship law, despite the police denying permission to it, comes a day after thousands of students, activists and opposition leaders hit the streets in the national capital defying security clampdown and prohibitory orders.

The fire over Citizenship Amendment Act continues to rage in the national capital. As the Bhim protesters continued to march towards Jantar Mantar several peaceful protesters were removed from the spot.

Protesters chanted slogans against the government's new legislation which grants citizenship to the persecuted minorities from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

At present, heavy security has been deployed at Jantar Mantar. Rapid Action Force officials along with police officials are at the spot.

Delhi police DCP Deepak Yadav said that these protesters have not been detained but are taken to another location where they will be dropped. He even asserted that these protesters didn't had permission to protest at Jantar Mantar.

A fresh protest erupted on Friday afternoon in northeast Delhi's Seelampur, which witnessed violence following demonstrations against the amended Citizenship Act earlier this week.

A large number of people started a protest march from Jafrabad to Seelampur shouting slogans and defying prohibitory orders after attending the Friday prayers at a mosque in the Welcome area.

Police have imposed prohibitory orders in Seelampur, restricting the assembly of more than four people.

Noida DM warns of action against rumour-mongers, says Internet won't be suspended

District Magistrate (DM) BN Singh on Friday said that Internet services in Noida and Greater Noida will not be suspended and warned of strict action against those who attempted to disturb law and order situation amid the ongoing protests across the state.

"Internet services will not be suspended in Noida and Greater Noida. We are keeping a watch on the trouble makers. If somebody tries to disturb the law and order here, stern action will be taken against them," the DM told. 

Internet services have been suspended in Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Pilibhit, Prayagraj, Meerut and Bareilly.

Jamia Millia Islamia and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh metro stations in Delhi were opened on Friday, around 24 hours after they were shut in view of protests in the city against the amended Citizenship Act.

At least 20 metro stations in the national capital were closed on Thursday, following a request from Delhi Police, who wanted to restrict the movement of protesters. 

All stations, except Jamia Millia Islamia and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, were opened on Thursday evening.

"Entry & exit gates at all stations have been opened. Normal services have resumed in all stations," the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation tweeted on Friday.

UP youth's death in CAA protests triggers controversy

The death of 25-year-old Mohammad Wakeel in Thursday's violent protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act in Lucknow has created a major controversy.

His family has said that Wakeel was not part of the protest and they would not bury his body until justice was done to him.

"He has left behind a seven-month pregnant wife and six younger siblings. He was the sole breadwinner of the family and was an e-rickshaw driver. He had gone out to buy vegetables and medicines and we were informed from his mobile in the evening that he is in hospital," said his father Sharfuddin.

Wakeel received a bullet injury in his stomach and succumbed in hospital on Thursday evening.

Internet services restored in Assam after 9 days

Mobile internet services resumed in Assam on Friday, ten days after it was snapped in the wake of violent protests over the new citizenship law. 

A senior official of private telecom operator Airtel said the ban was lifted from 9 am on Friday.

"As we did not received any fresh order to continue with the blackout, we have lifted the ban from 9 am," he said.

The state government had said that mobile internet services in the state would be restored from Friday though the Gauhati High Court had ordered restoration of the service by 5 pm on Thursday.

Broadband services have already resumed in Assam.

Several UP cities face internet shutdown

Lucknow: The internet services have been shut down in seven cities of Uttar Pradesh including Lucknow.

The cities that are facing a complete internet shutdown include Lucknow, Bareilly, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj, Sambhal, Meerut, Mau and Kanpur.

This has been done after Thursday's protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned violent in Lucknow and Sambhal and led to large scale destruction of public and private property.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Avanish Awasthi said that the shutdown would continue till December 21 midnight. All private telecom operators have also shutdown their service after the government order.

This has been done in view of protests planned after Friday prayers in several cities.

According to a senior police official, it was found late on Thursday night that the violent protests on Thursday were being live-streamed on the social media which aggravated the situation.

"Apart from the internet, SMS and messenger services have also been blocked. We are trying to inform our customers about this," said a private telecom manager in Lucknow.

The shutdown is mainly going to impact the news industry, which is largely dependent on internet for news transmission.

Students of Jamia Millia Islamia university in New Delhi offered roses to police personnel deployed for security ton Friday. The students were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Meanwhile, locals in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal also offered roses to police, thanking them to help the protests. Anti-CAA protests are taking place peacefully here.

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was on Friday detained near Daryaganj during a protest march from Jama Masjid to Jantar Mantar, the outfit claimed.

According to Bhim Army, the police tried to detain Azad at Jama Masjid but he managed to getaway. However, he was detained later near Daryaganj, it said.

The massive protest march led by Bhim Army against the citizenship law, despite the police denying permission to it, comes a day after thousands of students, activists and opposition leaders hit the streets in the national capital defying security clampdown and prohibitory orders.

The fire over Citizenship Amendment Act continues to rage in the national capital. As the Bhim protesters continued to march towards Jantar Mantar several peaceful protesters were removed from the spot.

Protesters chanted slogans against the government's new legislation which grants citizenship to the persecuted minorities from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

At present, heavy security has been deployed at Jantar Mantar. Rapid Action Force officials along with police officials are at the spot.

Delhi police DCP Deepak Yadav said that these protesters have not been detained but are taken to another location where they will be dropped. He even asserted that these protesters didn't had permission to protest at Jantar Mantar.

A fresh protest erupted on Friday afternoon in northeast Delhi's Seelampur, which witnessed violence following demonstrations against the amended Citizenship Act earlier this week.

A large number of people started a protest march from Jafrabad to Seelampur shouting slogans and defying prohibitory orders after attending the Friday prayers at a mosque in the Welcome area.

Police have imposed prohibitory orders in Seelampur, restricting the assembly of more than four people.

Noida DM warns of action against rumour-mongers, says Internet won't be suspended

District Magistrate (DM) BN Singh on Friday said that Internet services in Noida and Greater Noida will not be suspended and warned of strict action against those who attempted to disturb law and order situation amid the ongoing protests across the state.

"Internet services will not be suspended in Noida and Greater Noida. We are keeping a watch on the trouble makers. If somebody tries to disturb the law and order here, stern action will be taken against them," the DM told. 

Internet services have been suspended in Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Pilibhit, Prayagraj, Meerut and Bareilly.

Jamia Millia Islamia and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh metro stations in Delhi were opened on Friday, around 24 hours after they were shut in view of protests in the city against the amended Citizenship Act.

At least 20 metro stations in the national capital were closed on Thursday, following a request from Delhi Police, who wanted to restrict the movement of protesters. 

All stations, except Jamia Millia Islamia and Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, were opened on Thursday evening.

"Entry & exit gates at all stations have been opened. Normal services have resumed in all stations," the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation tweeted on Friday.

UP youth's death in CAA protests triggers controversy

The death of 25-year-old Mohammad Wakeel in Thursday's violent protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act in Lucknow has created a major controversy.

His family has said that Wakeel was not part of the protest and they would not bury his body until justice was done to him.

"He has left behind a seven-month pregnant wife and six younger siblings. He was the sole breadwinner of the family and was an e-rickshaw driver. He had gone out to buy vegetables and medicines and we were informed from his mobile in the evening that he is in hospital," said his father Sharfuddin.

Wakeel received a bullet injury in his stomach and succumbed in hospital on Thursday evening.

Internet services restored in Assam after 9 days

Mobile internet services resumed in Assam on Friday, ten days after it was snapped in the wake of violent protests over the new citizenship law. 

A senior official of private telecom operator Airtel said the ban was lifted from 9 am on Friday.

"As we did not received any fresh order to continue with the blackout, we have lifted the ban from 9 am," he said.

The state government had said that mobile internet services in the state would be restored from Friday though the Gauhati High Court had ordered restoration of the service by 5 pm on Thursday.

Broadband services have already resumed in Assam.

The cities that are facing a complete internet shutdown include Lucknow, Bareilly, Aligarh, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj, Sambhal, Meerut, Mau and Kanpur.

This has been done after Thursday's protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) turned violent in Lucknow and Sambhal and led to large scale destruction of public and private property.

Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Avanish Awasthi said that the shutdown would continue till December 21 midnight. All private telecom operators have also shutdown their service after the government order.

This has been done in view of protests planned after Friday prayers in several cities.

According to a senior police official, it was found late on Thursday night that the violent protests on Thursday were being live-streamed on the social media which aggravated the situation.

"Apart from the internet, SMS and messenger services have also been blocked. We are trying to inform our customers about this," said a private telecom manager in Lucknow.

The shutdown is mainly going to impact the news industry, which is largely dependent on internet for news transmission.
