Pune (Maharashtra): A Zilla Parishad school in Maharashtra's Wablewadi in Shirur Taluqua is setting a fine example for the world to follow, as it has become an ideal 'zero energy' school.
The Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpeyee school, is India’s first and the World’s only third 'zero energy' school. It has also got the honour of being the first tablet school in Maharashtra.
Wablewadi is a tiny village with only 50 to 60 dwellings at a distance of two and a half km from Shikrapur in Shirur Taluka. The population of the village is just 400.
However, until six years ago, the school meant a mere botchy structure of two rooms with dilapidated walls. Students had no other choice but to study amidst water leaking from the walls. It was with the help of villagers and students, that headmaster Dattatray Ware completely transformed the sorry structure into a beautiful building.
With top-class facilities, today, the very same school has become an inspiration for educational institutes world over.
Art of Living and Bank of New York have aided in the transformation of the school.
With a width and length of 22 feet each and 24 feet height, classrooms of this school are made completely of glass. All the rooms are eco-friendly. There is adequate natural light and inlets for fresh air. Besides, zero energy rooms do not require maintenance and repair works.
The students are not just getting an education here, but there is also a focus on their overall development along with studies.
In this ZP school, enrollments are completed for the next two years and more than four thousand students are on the waiting list. Many teachers, officials and guardians from different states are visiting this school to observe the standard and mode of education.
Many state governments are preparing themselves to implement this model of zero energy schools in their respective states.
