Major fire mishaps in Mumbai

At least 11 people died after a fire broke out late at night on Thursday at a Mumbai mall housing a Covid-19 hospital where patients were being treated. The fire reportedly started on the first floor of the mall located in Mumbai's Bhandup area but the smoke had reached up to the Sunrise Hospital on the third floor.

Hyderabad: Nearly 40 hours after the massive fire in a suburban mall claimed 11 lives in a Covid hospital in the same premises, hundreds of angry and weeping store-owners confronted the government with the huge losses they have suffered in the blaze on Saturday.

The conflagration broke out on the first floor of the Dreams Mall in Bhandup just before midnight late on Thursday - quickly spread to the second floor and then engulfed the third floor where the Sunrise Hospital treating Covid-19 patients is located.

Mumbai Police registered an FIR in a fire incident at Sunrise Hospital in Bhandup West in which 11 people lost their lives.

But this is not the first incident in that Mumbai witnessed such kind of fire mishap. Several times in past, multi-storeyed buildings in Mumbai have faced such tragedies.

Here is the list of fire mishaps in high rise buildings in the last six years.

26.03.2021: The fire broke out at the Sunrise Hospital in the Dreams Mall building in Bhandup area Mumbai, shortly after midnight. 10 dead in fire at mall hospital treating COVID-19 patients.

23.10.2020: The fire broke out at the city centre mall in Mumbai's Nagpada area. About 14 fire engines and 17 Jumbo tankers were engaged in the fire fighting operation.

26.08.2020: A fire broke out in a 15-storey building in Worli area of central Mumbai.

17.02.2020: A major fire broke out on the eight floor of GST Bhavan at Mazgoan in Byculla.

22.12.2019: A massive fire which broke out on the 7th, 8th and the 13th floor of Labh Shrivalli building in West Mumbai’s Vile Parle.

28.12.2018: Five people, including four senior citizens, were killed and two others injured in a major fire that broke out in a high-rise residential building , a civic official said. The 16-storey building is located in suburban Tilak Nagar.

22.08.2018: Four people have been reported dead as of now and 14 injured in a fire that broke out at Crystal Tower near Hindmata Cinema in Parel,Mumbai.

30.05.2018: Five people lost their lives after the Technic Plus One building in Goregaon caught fire on May 30. Besides this, nearly 100 labourers who were working at the location were rescued by the fire brigade. Four of the five victims lost their lives in the course of treatment.

01.04.2018: Four people died after a fire broke out in Maimoon Building that housed residential complexes in the suburban part of Marol in Mumbai. Besides the four dead, five people were injured in the accident. The deceased were declared brought dead at a nearby hospital.

28.12.2017: Fourteen people were killed and at least 16 injured after a fire broke out in a rooftop restaurant and engulfed a four-storey building in Mumbai’s thriving Kamala Mills complex. Eleven of the victims were women, many of whom had come to a pub, 1Above, to celebrate the birthday of 29-year-old Khushboo Mehta Bansali, who was among the dead.

18.12.2017: Twelve people were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a snack shop in Saki Naka area of the city in December 2017.

The accident occurred at Makaria Compound on Khairani Road in the wee hours of December 18.

The dead included people who were working inside the compound and were trapped inside. They were reportedly declared brought dead at a nearby hospital.

06.07.2015: At least seven people died and 22 people were injured after a fire broke out at a 21-storey building in Powai in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
