The government has slashed prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre with effect from March 15. The Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced the price cut decision via social media platform saying that the OMC's have informed the ministry of the revision in prices across the country.

As Delhi's air quality turned to 'severe' category, the Centre's pollution control panel has issued directions on Thursday night to halt non-essential construction work, stone crushing and mining in Delhi-NCR. The Centre's Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) issued guidelines for Stage - III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) worked out to control air pollution. GRAP categorises actions into four stages: Stage I - 'Poor' (AQI 201-300); Stage II - 'Very Poor' (AQI 301-400); Stage III - 'Severe' (AQI 401-450); and Stage IV - 'Severe Plus' (AQI>450). The action comes after the CAQM banned all the old diesel buses from National Capital Region (NCR) of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana as the air quality in the capital deteriorated to 'Very Poor' from 'Poor'.

From today, old diesel buses will not be allowed to ply in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), as per a direction issued by the Delhi government, as a measure to combat the air pollution caused by the diesel-powered buses operating in the region. While vehicular emissions account for a significant portion of Delhi's air pollution, it can be brought down if buses in Delhi operate only on compressed natural gas and electricity. Buses from neighbouring Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are operating BS-III and BS-IV vehicles, which will now be barred if they are from NCR regions.

To prevent increasing pollution in the capital, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has issued an order that BS-III and BS-IV diesel buses will not be allowed to enter Delhi from November 1. Only BS-VI buses of CNG, electric and diesel will be allowed to operate. This rule will also apply to private buses as well. With the implementation of this rule, more than 60 per cent of buses will stop operating, which will have a direct impact on passengers.

Oil marketing companies (OMC) are likely to reduce prices of petrol and diesel, according to government sources. The companies have almost recovered their losses and are nearing normalcy as evident by their positive quarterly results. As a result, the expectation is for the companies to lower the prices of petrol and diesel since they no longer face under-recoveries in these fuels, according to the source from the government said on Wednesday.
