New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has refused to extend interim bail granted to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, in the Unnao rape case. The next hearing is scheduled for January 27.
A bench headed by Justice Pratibha Singh stated that Sengar must surrender on January 20 first, after which his plea for extension would be considered.
On December 5, the high court granted two weeks of interim bail to Sengar on medical grounds.
During the proceedings, Justice Dharmesh Sharma recused himself from hearing Sengar's plea seeking suspension of the sentence in the minor rape case. The judge cited his past connection in the case at Tis Hazari Court, which delivered the conviction in the case in 2018. Later, Justice Singh directed that the case be listed before a bench without including Justice Sharma.
Meanwhile, Sengar's counsel argued for an extension of interim bail, citing a cataract surgery scheduled at AIIMS on January 24. However, Justice Singh denied the request, stating, “Surrender first, and we will consider your application. AIIMS can reschedule the surgery.”
