Nagpur (Maharashtra): A 17-year-old girl was killed while her parents and brother were injured in a massive fire that broke out early this morning at a perfume godown in the congested Itwari market in Nagpur. All the injured are undergoing treatment at Mayo Hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Anushka Bakhde (17) and those who sustained injuries are Anushka's father Praveen Bakhde, mother Preeti Bakhde and brother Sarthak Bakhde. Preliminary investigations have revealed that short circuit led to the fire, police said.
Praveen Bakhde, who owns 'Renuka Novelty' shop in Khaparipura area of Itwari, lives with his family at the premises. When the fire broke out in the godown on the ground floor this morning, the entire family was asleep and before anyone could understand, the entire building was engulfed in flames.
A member of the family woke up and noticing flames around him, started to scream. Hearing his cries, people living nearby rushed outside and the fire department was immediately contacted.
On information about the incident, eight fire tenders were pressed into service. The godown where the fire broke out, hoarded perfumes and shoes. As several plastic items were present at the spot, extinguishing the flames became a challenging task for the firemen. Four people who were trapped inside the building were evacuated.
"The fire was brought under control after a lot of effort. While one person succumbed to her injuries on the spot, remaining three are hospitalised. Doctors said the condition of two family members is stated to be critical," police said.
