International Asteroid Day which is being observed globally on Sunday June 30 is aimed at raising awareness about asteroids, the rocky leftovers from the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago and the potential hazards they pose on our planet. The day commemorates the anniversary of the Tunguska event in 1908 when asteroid or comet fragment exploding over Siberia, Russia, flattened around 2,000 square kilometers of forest.
