Ashok Saraf, Rajeev Verma, Bombay Jayashri, Other Artists to Receive Sangeet Natak Akademi Award

The Sangeet Natak Akademi disclosed the list of six Akademi Fellows and 92 artists. Among them are actors Ashok Saraf, Rajeev Verma, and singer Bombay Jayashri, who will receive the award for the years 2022 and 2023.

Hyderabad: The Sangeet Natak Akademi, on Wednesday, revealed the names of the individuals who will be honoured with the esteemed Akademi Fellow and Akademi Puraskar awards for the years 2022 and 2023.

Among the distinguished awardees are actors Rajeev Verma, Ashok Saraf, and singer Bombay Jayashri. The Akademi, which is the National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama, selects notable figures from the performing arts community to be recognised as Akademi Fellows.

The newly elected Fellows include R Visweswaran, a talented veena player, Sunayana Hazarilal, an accomplished Kathak dancer, and the renowned Kuchipudi duo Raja and Radha Reddy.

Noteworthy figures in the field, such as Vinayak Khedekar, a folklorist and author, Dulal Roy, a theatre director, and DP Sinha, a playwright, have also been elected as Akademi Fellows.

In a statement, the General Council of Sangeet Natak Akademi emphasised the significance of the Akademi Fellowship as a prestigious and rare honour, limited to a select group of 40 individuals at any given time.

In addition to the Fellows, 92 remarkable artists specialising in various genres of music, dance, theatre, and traditional arts have been chosen for the Akademi Puraskar awards.

These talented artists represent a diverse range of performing arts, including Hindustani and Carnatic vocal and instrumental music, classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, and Odissi, as well as contemporary dance styles.

The awards, which come with prize money and honourary items, will be conferred in a special ceremony by President Draupadi Murmu and the chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi.

The ceremony will also honour 80 young artists with the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards, celebrating their contributions to the performing arts. With a significant prize amount and recognition.

These awards highlight the Akademi's commitment to nurturing talent and promoting excellence in the field of performing arts.
