Wayanad: Congress leader and UDF candidate for the Wayanad assembly bypoll, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday accused the central government of "showing the worst face of hate politics to the Wayanad landslide victims".
Priyanka was speaking at a meeting at Therattammal in Ernad constituency.
"The central government has not yet provided financial assistance to the disaster victims. We have seen the same situation in Himachal Pradesh. Even when major calamities occur due to their cheap politics, they are not declared as national disaster. No compensation was paid there either," she said.
"Our nation has a history of achieving freedom through non-violence, without shedding a single drop of blood. We have a constitution that places the common people at its core. That is what democracy means. People are paramount in a democracy. However, the ruling BJP’s politics diverges from this. They have no idea about the essence of this nation," she added.
She accused the BJP of "spreading hatred and animosity among the people".
"Their policies are shaped to help the big five or six industrialists in the country. As a result, the issues faced by ordinary citizens are ignored. Their only apparent goal is to remain in power at any cost, a trend we have witnessed over the past decade," the Congress leader said.
Priyanka is contesting from Wayanad against LDF's veteran leader Sathyan Mokeri, a former MLA, and the BJP's Navya Haridas, a two-time councillor of the Kozhikode Corporation marking her electoral debut in this bypoll.
The by-election was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat following his victory in the Rai Bareli constituency in the recent parliamentary elections. The by-election will be held on November 13. (With agency inputs)
