Kolkata: The registration of former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, has been cancelled. The decision was taken by the West Bengal Medical Council following a meeting on Wednesday and a notification in this regard was issued today.
Following which, Ghosh, who was earlier suspended by the health department, has now lost his license to practise medicine in India. The move has come as relief to the agitating junior doctors, who demanded disciplinary action against Ghosh.
Ghosh was initially arrested by the CBI on corruption charges and then in rape and murder of the woman doctor at the state-owned hospital on August 9. Since then, the senior doctors demanded cancellation of Ghosh's registration. Ghosh was showcaused by the West Bengal Medical Council and asked to respond within three days. He however did not submit any response.
On the other hand, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) questioned as to why his registration was not cancelled even after that. In a meeting of the West Bengal Medical Council on Wednesday, it was decided to cancel Ghosh's registration and a notification was issued in this regard today.
Junior doctor Rumelika Kumar said, "Since the first day, we have been saying that Sandip Ghosh is one of the leaders of threat culture. But we did not understand why it took 40 days to cancel his registration. We can say that good sense has finally prevailed."
Senior doctors have claimed that not only Ghosh, but the entire medical council should be disbanded.
Meanwhile, the agitating junior doctors have alleged that their makeshift tents, bamboo shafts and pedestal fans were removed from the protest site near the Swasthya Bhawan following alleged police pressurise. The cops, however, have refuted these allegations as baseless.
"All arrangements for the sit-in are being funded by the public. Some decorators volunteered to provide us with tents, fans, bamboo shafts, and makeshift beds. When we contacted them about why they were taking away the items, they said they would replace these as they needed to use these items for making Durga Puja marquees," a junior doctor said on Wednesday night.
