Intro:New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Tuesday has extended the deadline for publication of final National Register of Citizen (NRC) in Assam till August 31.
Body:A division bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Rahintan Fali while giving the direction also asked the Centre, Assam government and all respondents in the case to come on August 7 with some mote clarity on some issues.
"We welcome the decision of the Supreme Court for extending the deadline. The court has given the extension for quality checking," said All Assam Students Union (AASU) chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya.
The NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela is learnt to have appealed the court for one month extension for quality checking. Hajela has also told the court that time is required as the state is reeling under flood.
"We believe a clear and a full proof NRC will come when the final NRC will be published," said All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) advisor Azizur Rahman.
Appearing for the respondent in the case (AAMSU), advocate Fuzail A Ayyubi said that the apex court has rejected two appeal from the government side seeking 20 percent varification along the border areas and 10 percent varification in other areas of Assam.
"The court has rejected the two appeal but due to more quality checking and flood, the court has extended the deadline for the publication of NRC till August 31," said Ayyubi.
Conclusion:The NRC is being updated to detect the illegal Bangladeshi living in Assam.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, however, said that once the NRC is published is Assam, similar process will be initiatied for across India.
"Each and every illegal foreigner will be detected and deported from every inch of the country as per international law," Shah has said.
