Tiruppur:A 45-year-old software engineer and his parents were hacked to death by a gang that made way with eight sovereigns from the deceased, at their farmhouse in the outskirts of Tiruppur district, during the wee hours on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday, officials said.

Police identified the deceased as Deivasikamani (76), his wife Alamelu (65), and their son Senthilkumar (45). The farmhouse where the triple murder was reported is located in Semalaikaundampalayam, near Pongalur, in Tamil Nadu's Tiruppur district.

Police said the family was asleep when the attackers struck. Deivasikamani, who is believed to have stepped out of the house after he heard some noise from their plantation, was the first to be killed. The assailants then entered the house where they hacked to death both Senthilkumar and Alamelu while the mother and son were asleep.

Senthilkumar who was working with an IT company, was living with his wife and children, in Saravanampatti, Coimbatore. He came to his native place to attend a domestic function.

The horrific crime came to light when a barber with whom the family had fixed a home visit, arrived early on Friday. The barber could not elicit any response from the family. He entered the house and found all three hacked to death, police said. In most rural areas of Tamil Nadu, barbers offer home visit services while running their own barbershop.

Based on the barber's alert, Avinasipalayam police arrived at the spot and Palladam DSP Suresh joined the local police team. All three bodies were moved to the Tiruppur Government Hospital for autopsy.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the gang went on a rampage in the house looking for valuables, left the house ransacked and furniture broken and household articles strewn around.

Tiruppur City Police Commissioner Lakshmi, who was holding additional charge of Tiruppur district police, stated that the murders seemed to have involved more than one perpetrator, and investigations were ongoing.

"We have formed five special teams to track down the culprits. We will catch them soon," she told the media persons.

Authorities are examining the possibility of stolen jewellery being involved and are conducting thorough checks on vehicles in the area. Forensic experts collected evidence including fingerprints while the police deployed sniffer dogs.
